The country, not the state!! I’m sure you are wondering….why Georgia? Well, this country has been on my husband’s list for years and we also tend to sway towards the unknown/off the grid places at times. Key words to describe this place: birthplace of christianity, former soviet republic, houses several UNESCO world heritage sites, wine production dating back to 6,000 years BC and the spectacular caucasus mountains!

We went in October during our fall break and our Itinerary was the following: 7 days and 7 nights. Arrive to Tblisi (via Georgian Air which was the only direct flight for us), rented a car at the airport through Avis (very inexpensive: 200 euros for an SUV for 5 days) and drove directly to Lopota Lake Resort in Kakheti (which took 2 hours). Spent 2 days in Kakheti (wine region) then drove to Tblisi, the capital (which took @ 2 hours). Spent 2 days in Tblisi then we drove to Kazbegi, caucasus mountains (which took 2 1/2 hours). Spent 2 days in Kazbegi then drove back to Tblisi and spent 1 more night. It wasn’t difficult to drive in Georgia; however, if you are going to the caucasus mountains, definitely rent an SUV with 4 wheel drive. Most signs are in english and waze navigation worked there.
